Fanfiction Author and Freelance Writer – Mokibobolink
‘Mokibobolink’ (aka ‘Moki’) started out as a fanfiction writer with a story for a movie over 12 years old at the time. Though that fic didn’t get much attention, the bug still managed to bite pretty hard and she moved on to other genres. After dabbling in fanfic for Harry Potter and Firefly, she found a following after posting her first NCIS fanfiction story. From there, she went from writing mostly short stories to multi-chapter ones and was soon getting hundreds of reviews for each one. To date, her most current NCIS story – ‘The Cavalry Rides Again’ – has generated over 750 reviews.
Moki originally wrote fanfiction in her spare time, usually dreaming up stories while sitting at a corporate job where she worked on mundane tasks such as updating spreadsheets most of the day. In 2009, the company she worked for was hit hard by the recession and, like many other businesses in the country, was forced to lay off staff. After working there for over 6 years, the layoff came as a surprise, but also a blessing. Deciding that she didn’t want to go back into the corporate 9-5 world, Moki chose to take her life in a whole new direction.
Turning a love of fanfiction into a career as a freelance writer
She took her love of writing and decided to turn it into a career. Taking the advice of some friends, she started a blog where she reviewed her favorite television shows, only concentrating on the things she liked about the episodes, rather than the things she didn’t. Called ‘The Positively Positive’, the blog grew daily and while researching for it one day, Moki came across a wonderful television news site called Daemon’s TV.
Deciding to take a chance, Moki answered an ad looking for new writers on the site and was soon hired. After starting out as a television reviewer, she quickly moved on to writing commentary articles, doing phone interviews, penning a Supernatural column with another writer on the site, and eventually going on set visits to interview casts and crews from various TV shows including Covert Affairs, Necessary Roughness and Suits. Recently she attended Comic Con 2011 and did video interviews from the press rooms for shows like Supernatural, NCIS: Los Angeles, Being Human, Covert Affairs, Psych, Sanctuary, Eureka, Burn Notice and more. Through it all, Moki has maintained her love of fanfiction and continues to work on her own stories whenever she can, as well as read and review those of others. In addition to acting as writer and blogmaster for ‘Moki’s Fanfiction Blog’, she also offers fanfiction consulting/writing coaching services to anyone needing assistance with a fanfiction story or writing in general.
